What a service registers to do tells you what it has to buy

Regulated activities are the most under-used field on the register. They are a statement of capability, and capability implies equipment and staff.

Reading capability off the register

A provider cannot lawfully carry out a regulated activity it is not registered for. So the activity list is a hard constraint rather than marketing copy. Surgical procedures mean theatre capability. Treatment of disease, disorder or injury covers an enormous range and needs reading alongside the service type. Diagnostic and screening procedures imply imaging or laboratory capacity.

Where the field misleads

Breadth
Treatment of disease, disorder or injury is registered by services with almost nothing in common.
Registered but not offered
A provider may register for an activity it has not started delivering.
Location versus provider
Activities are registered at both levels and the lists do not always agree.
Service type is the other half
The activity alone rarely identifies the service. Read them together.
